painted ladies

The Steele Maiden: Painted LadiesBy today we’re moving into the heart of America and headed towards Kansas City, but just a few short days ago we were strolling the steep streets of San Francisco.  I mentioned it here, but whenever I travel I always try and dress a little bit more like that particular city.  For San Francisco, that meant easy classics (a neutral cardigan and wedge boots), a hint of nautical (stripes), and pastels to match the gorgeous homes (these mint jeans).  Speaking of homes, even if you’re not exactly an architecture buff you’ll probably recognize the row of colorful homes behind me here – known as the Painted Ladies – from ‘Full House’ fame.  Aside from Alamo Square (the park pictured), we grabbed a bit to eat in the trendy Marina and Mission areas (highly recommend both Tacolicious for margaritas and clearly, tacos, as well Craftsman & Wolves for artisan pastries), and took a drive across the Golden Gate.  Somehow I’m guessing today’s views through Kansas will be slightly less striking.  p.s. thank you to everyone that has wished us well on our journey! I’m so glad to have you all to share this with.F21 T-Shirt // Target Cardigan – similar // Zara Jeans – similar at Gap – now 35% off w/ code MARCH // Sunglass Warehouse Glasses c/o // Bag via Marshalls // OluKai Boots c/o

setting sail

The Steele Maiden: Setting Sail
Today is officially our last day living in Los Angeles.  By tomorrow morning we’ll be on the road headed up along the California coast towards San Francisco (the first stop of our 6 day road trip).  After a week of packing and finalizing our lives here (including a lengthy visit to the DMV, going on 5 days without a fridge and an apartment that now consists of nothing more than our mattress and the suitcases we’re taking on our trip) I’m feeling fully ready to set out on our next adventure.  Before we left though, I wanted to visit my favorite park in Marina del Rey one last time, and a slightly nautical look felt like it fit right in.  I’ll miss these views but now, my sails are headed East.  Hope you’ll stick around for the trip.  I’m going to need some company by the time I hit the flat lands of Kansas.

sweet things

The Steele Maiden: Sweet Things
Awhile back I pinned this image and the notion to mix a bright blue sweater and feminine pink skirt has been mulling around in my head ever since.  Yesterday as I was in the thick of packing up the apartment I pulled out this sweet lace skirt (stored with my “summer clothes” although since it’s been above 70 since December I’m not sure why I ever thought I needed any distinction..) and bam – the outfit was made.  Somehow in the late afternoon lighting my cobalt blue sweater (last seen here) took on a bit of a purple hue, but mixed with a floral vintage bag and my hair in soft curls the whole thing is over the top girly anyway, so I guess it works.  These pictures were taken in nearby downtown Culver City and was one of the last locations Adam had wanted to try and shoot before we left our neighborhood.  We’re both getting excited at the thought of all of the picture opportunities along our road trip!

gold coast

The Steele Maiden: Gold CoastIt’s hard to believe that I’ll be giving up these incredible views (and temperatures) in just a matter of days.  Our time in Los Angeles, while short, was exactly what we had hoped for when we concocted the plan in my tiny New York studio apartment exactly 2 years ago.  Our chance to see the country (between the soon to be 2 cross country road trips), explore a new place, soak up the sunshine and have a big adventure while we’re young that will only get harder once we settle down and eventually start a family.  There were bumps along the way, but for the most part, our time spent here will always be remembered as one long, perfect summer getaway.  An adventure that we will forever be happy we took.  To commemorate, one last trip to the beach was inevitable and sunglasses that reflected the lines of palm trees and golden shoes that glimmered in the sand seemed fitting.Sunglass Warehouse Sunglasses c/o // Tulle Jacket – now on sale! // AE T-Shirt – similar // Free People Dress // GH Bass Co. living color

The Steele Maiden: Living ColorThere’s nothing quite like a pop of bright color (or 3) to give your classic stripes and denim a jolt of life.  For some reason I had all but forgotten about this dress since the Summer (when I used to pair it with little more than my favorite espadrilles), but in an effort to remix my closet a bit I decided to layer it up with.. you guessed it.. my old faithful chambray shirt.  And then, to liven things up, added a vintage magenta scarf, neon yellow satchel and cobalt blue pumps.  Also, apparently, stripes and florals are my new Monday thing.  And I think I’m okay with that. J.Crew Chambray Shirt // Vintage Scarf // Ruche Dress – exact version here // Target Bag – love this one // H&M Blue Pumps – similar
