A HYBRID WARDROBE FOR WORK TO WEEKEND

This past year and a half has drastically changed the way we work. And likewise the way we dress. I’ve been on a ‘hybrid’ model since the start of this year – meaning I work 3 days a week at home and 2 days at our Brooklyn office. And it occurred to me that I’ve started to transition to a hybrid wardrobe to match. A dressier trouser at the office, but just the blazer paired with jeans for video calls from home. A sweater for when it’s chilly at the office that can just as easily be worn into the weekend. If the mantra used to be “dress for the job you want” – I think it might now be, more accurately, “dress for the life you have”.

These separates from Talbots are a great example of pieces that can go from WFH to the office to the weekend – worn more casually or pulled together for a more professional look. A checked blazer, matching trousers, chunky cardigan and relaxed fit jeans. I swapped in one comfortable pair of heels, sneakers, a t-shirt and a button down and the options are kind of endless. They’ll all be getting a lot of wear this Fall and beyond.

Are you getting dressed up for work these days? Or still gravitating towards more casual pieces? I’ll always lean towards getting dressed but still want to be comfortable. All about that hybrid balance.

HALFWAY THROUGH 2020

We’re almost exactly at the halfway point in this year and I think, whether we are ready to admit it or not, 2020 has changed us all. As jobs, relationships, health and homes have shifted externally, many of us have also been internally examining our priorities, goals and privileges. It’s a lot to process for just 6 months time. And who knows what the next 6 months holds? It feels like we’re in that muddy, middle period. Which is often so uncomfortable. But it also serves as a good check in point so that you can make sure you’re pointed in the right direction for the rest of the year.

When I look back on my resolutions for this year – I wanted to prioritize health and happiness. There have been some obvious stumbling blocks on those fronts – but overall I think I’m still doing my best to make those areas a focus. It’s just that how I achieve both looks slightly different now. With my gym closed for the foreseeable and my commute now consisting of nothing more than the walk from my bed to my desk – I’m taking long walks every morning instead. While work/life balance has been tricky in this time with my job being more demanding than ever – I’m making it a point to go to bed earlier and set hours aside on the weekends to read.

Aside from my resolutions I also make a lower pressure list every year (19 for 2019, 20 for 2020 and so on) that I don’t share here as they’re more personal. Some are totally fun, frivolous things – like see a Broadway show. And some are bigger picture items, such as specific financial goals. This list feels the most out of touch when I look at it now – as so many of the things on it that seemed totally achievable at the start of the year are completely impossible now. They’ve closed Broadway until January 2021 after all! I’m thinking of making a revised list, drafted with our “new normal” in mind?

This year looks nothing like any of us thought it would on January 1st. But on July 1st – we can set intentions, no matter the circumstances – for what the rest of the year might look like. Here’s to braving the unknown and checking a few things off our 2020 lists along the way.

SIMPLE WORK FROM HOME OFFICE STYLE

Over the course of the past 6+ weeks (how has it been that long?!) of working from home I’ve developed a simple formula that gets me ready for Zoom meetings in less than 5 minutes flat. Most of the time I spend the days in a simple pair of jeans and t-shirt anyway – but when I know I need to be camera ready for a conference call I throw on a great blazer and add one distinct accessory. A pretty scarf, headband that helps to hide my incessantly growing roots or a layered necklace. That’s it, and I instantly feel put together and presentable. I highly suggest it the next time your boss suddenly wants to Facetime.

WINTER WORKWEAR WITH MAGGY LONDON

The Steele Maiden: Winter Workwear - Maggy London Red Floral Shift Dress

Earlier in the Fall I polled you guys on Instagram to ask what you wanted to see more of going forward – and one of the standout results was a request for more work-wear. When it comes to office style, I’m lucky to work in a ‘creative casual’ environment. But as my role has grown and I’ve become responsible for running meetings and managing a small team – I’ve started to rely on pieces that lean towards a more polished look.

One of my very favorite office-friendly brands is Maggy London. I first worked with them at the end of the summer here and wore those 3 dresses on repeat through the Fall. So when they came back and asked me to style a few looks that would transition from Fall to Winter I jumped at the chance. Their work dresses always feel feminine without being frilly and office-appropriate without being boring.

You can see all three looks that I styled here and below is this red floral shift dress, my favorite from the three I styled (apparently I’m on a red dress kick lately). I love that it feels festive enough to wear straight out after work for holiday cocktails. Not to mention, seriously flattering.

And lastly, since we’re right in the middle of my 5 days of giveaways – I’m giving away this same dress here. Good luck!

OFFICE HOURS: FALL WORK STYLE WITH MAGGY LONDON

The Steele Maiden: Office Style for Fall with Maggy London

A couple of weeks back, I joined up with the team at Maggy London to share my take on office dressing this Fall. I’m always looking for ways to make workwear feel a bit more fun, and with the help of their flattering, on-trend (but still office appropriate) dresses – it felt like such a cinch.

Below – I style 3 dresses for now, when the days are still warm, and later in the fall, when the weather’s cooler. Would love to know which is your favorite! See even more photos from our shoot here and a big thank you to the entire Maggy London crew and @seanmaddenphoto who shot all of these photos.
