Talk to me in 3 months and I’ll say I hate coats of any kind, but the first time I put them on each year? I love ’em. The coziness, the way you can play with layers, the mix of textures. Suddenly a sundress and sandals just seems like a distant, boring notion. So when Banana Republic gave me the chance to pick out a fresh fall outerwear combo for the season, I hit ‘add to cart’ before you can say November.

Thank goodness that winter weather from last week wasn’t here to stay (yet) and I’m able to sneak in a few more days of bare legs. Since I know that won’t last forever, I soaked up the weekend’s fall weather in this jacquard floral miniskirt and simple layers. Plus a velvet hair bow – because I can’t stop lately.

I know, I know – you’re still in full out pumpkin picking mode. But to me, the holiday season starts post-Halloween next week. One of the things I’m trying my best to do is really savor each season instead of getting so caught up in my hectic work/blog/life’s schedule that they just pass me right by. Last weekend we took a drive upstate and stopped at an apple orchard to pick up fresh pressed apple cider and – obviously – apple cider donuts. As soon as we got home I knew I wanted to find a fall cocktail recipe that could incorporate the cider. This seasonal take on traditional moscow mules was just the thing. Sweet from the cider but with a bit of zing from the lime and ginger beer and dash of spice from the cinnamon – these tasted like fall in a mug. Oh – and couldn’t be easier to make. If you’re looking for something to make at this weekend’s parties this one could be made in bigger batches is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Of all the trends this fall – or dare I say it.. holiday season – the one I may be most excited about is velvet. In rich jewel tones on everything from sumptuous side chairs to luxe sneakers to sharp blazers, velvet is popping up everywhere. And I admittedly want to add touches of it everywhere. As George Costanza (of Seinfeld fame) once said ‘I would drape myself in velvet if it were socially acceptable’. This season, it just may be. Here – a few of my very favorite options.
