The Steele Maiden: check plaid dress and trench coat
I feel like Nancy Drew in this outfit and I’m pretty okay with it.  In fact, if being a stylish sleuth means I get to wear plaid dresses, trench coats, block heels and tortoiseshell glasses every day than I’m totally on board.  I’ve been wearing my share of plaid lately (here and here) but I like that this dress feels less casual than it’s checked counterparts.  And these gold heeled shoes are always a fun exclamation point on an otherwise pretty classic outfit. The finishing touch here is my glasses, which I wear for distance but rarely show here on the blog.  That will probably be changing now that I picked up this pair of just oversized enough frames.  I used newly launched site Felix & Iris and can’t say enough good things (home try-ons, tons of cute options..).  And looking like you’re smart enough to crack the case is never a bad thing, right?

the right fluff

The Steele Maiden: Textured mini skirt and colorblock cardigan
We’re still in the magical time of year here in New York where light jackets and sweaters are needed, but you can get away with bare legs.  And since that’s basically my idea of the perfect outfit, I’ve been reveling in it.  Especially when bare legs are paired with this 1960’s Jean Shrimpton meets 1990’s Cher Horowitz miniskirt.  I mean it’s baby blue. And fluffy. And a-line. And basically the stuff of dreams.  I let the skirt steal the show here and otherwise went for a few of my favorite closet classics – a white silk button down, colorblock cardigan, ankle boots, and wool panama hat.  You know, the stuff of day to day life.  But how boring would life be if you didn’t throw in a fluffy skirt now and then?

p.s. I’m majorly itching for a hair switch (hence it being covered with a hat and tucked away into my collar…) and am thinking either blonder with Bardot bangs or dark brown and a bit shorter (eek!).  Thoughts?

going green

The Steele Maiden: ASOS midi skirt and Old Navy sweater
Anddd I’m back.  Sorry for the silence these past couple of days but it took a few boxes of tissues and most of the week to finally get over this cold.  Now to the good stuff.  I originally picked up this hunter green midi skirt before Fashion Week with the thought that it would be a perfect match to Fall’s traditional colors (burgundy, navy, camel…) – but it turns out it, this color goes with practically everything.  I first paired it with a bold cobalt blue here and this time took a spin with a monochromatic look, adding this fuzzy mint green sweater (a total steal from Old Navy).  It’s like black, but somehow so much better.  A few neutral accessories and a messy ponytail (note to self: time to tame this mane) and I was out the door.. and running towards the weekend!

red, white and new

The Steele Maiden: Plaid Jacket and Polka Dots with Knee High BootsCall me extra patriotic, but my favorite classic color combo has always been red, white and blue.  I find myself wearing the trio most in the Summer time when blue denim and white cotton just beg for a pop of red – but as we get into the swing of Fall I wanted to try taking the colors in a slightly less traditional direction.  This plaid sweater coat from Sheinside is perfectly boxy and adds a sort of mod feeling when paired with these knee high navy boots (think beyond brown and black when it comes to boots this Fall – I promise you won’t regret it).  I paired it with these burgundy red suede shorts (last seen during NYFW here) and a polka dot blouse I’ve had in my closet for years and years then threw on this powder blue cross body bag for an unexpected touch.  I’m a firm believer in dressing how you want to feel – and since so far this week I’m feeling terrible with a bad cold, this outfit was just enough fun to perk me up for an hour or so the other night.  Before promptly returning to my pile of tissues and the couch.
