As an East Coast native, I’ve spent the past few days checking in with friends and family as Hurricane Sandy hits.  While I certainly don’t suggest going out in that particular climate, in more reasonable conditions I think rain is no reason to hide.  Just the opposite, puddles be damned, I love the idea of throwing on a billowing maxi dress (white cotton easily washes and dries after all) and taking to the streets.  Just be sure to layer on a bright anorak, rain booties, and a waterproof bag.  The result should show that even in the face of a storm – you haven’t lost your sense of humor.

After living in New York for three years, the thought of finally having a backyard to do small projects like this has left me overzealous to say the least.  Which is how we ended up with 8 pumpkins to carve/decorate.  Luckily the boy was game to help and after carving just 2 of the bunch at our get together last week, we spent Saturday afternoon painting the rest.  With just 2 cans of spray paint, masking tape, dot stickers, and metallic sharpies – this project was inexpensive and easy and the results are pretty fun.  Just tape, spray and enjoy!  I chose a few patterns, a few solids, and a few with writing.  My favorites are the tiny polka dotted one and the all gold stunner.  Extra candy to any trick or treater who compliments these little lovelies.

This weekend was the perfect balance of productiveness (a California driver’s license and new VW Jetta were equally important and exciting) and laid back fun (enjoying carved pumpkin’s in our backyard, attending a costume party and window shopping down Rodeo Drive).  Check back tomorrow for the complete pumpkin decorating marathon that occurred at our house over the past couple of days!
