grey days

Is it just me (and the end of a week and a half long holiday vacation from work) or have the skies been particularly grey lately? Sometimes I combat this by pulling out all the colorful stops.. but over the weekend I thought why fight it.. and instead embraced the grey. What I lacked in color I made up for in texture with this tweed coat (previously seen here), jacquard sweater and matte tights. a week of style: day 5

The Steele Maiden: Weekend casual style in Sole Society and denim

If you’ve been following along this week, I’ve been taking you through my day to day (afternoon shopping in the West Village, date night downtown, happy hour with friends, commuting to the office…) and finally today’s weekend casual look for running errands in the East Village. The trick was – all of these looks used the same group of 10 closet staples remixed in various ways. A printed midi dress, ripped skinny jeans, black ankle strap heels, a boxy tote bag, faux fur stole, turtleneck cable sweater, chambray shirt, oversized clutch, patent leather oxfords and leopard coat. I wanted to start 2015 thinking more about quality vs. quantity and hopefully inspiring you all to look at your own closets with a fresh set of eyes. Now I’m off to enjoy my last (rainy/snowy) couple of days of break!

The Steele Maiden: Talbots Lace Pencil Skirt and Chambray Shirt

Happy New Year friends! I’ve got a pretty good feeling about 2015 and I’m hoping you’ll all stick around to see where it leads. To kick it off, I’m continuing with my ‘week of style’ – re-mixing some of my favorite closet classics in new ways. Yesterday I paired this leopard coat with my favorite new faux fur stole for an unexpected happy hour look, but today I’m showing you a more typical office look. This lace pencil skirt can easily be dressed up, but I like it a little more casual with a chambray shirt and patent leather oxfords. These baroque statement earrings finish it off. The Steele Maiden: Leopard Coat and Sole Society Heels

2014.. what a year! Adam and I said goodbye to Los Angeles in February after a couple years in the sun, and moved back to New York where we settled into exciting new jobs, an East Village apartment and our current lives as New Yorkers. Most days we walk all over taking in this crazy, wonderful city around us, stay up too late and get up too early to do it again. I wouldn’t change a thing right now, but I’m excited to see what 2015 holds. And as for all of you, I’m continuously grateful to have this little corner of the internet where I can share my musings (like the current week of style I’ve got going on). So thank you. And here’s to what the next year may hold!

The Steele Maiden: NYE Party in Anthropologie Faux Fur Stole and Sole Society Heels

Yesterday I mentioned that I’d be ringing in 2015 with a week-long style remix – with the hopes of starting off the new year full of ideas on how to approach your closet in new ways. I kicked things off with this plaid maxi dress worn casually (and as a skirt for that matter). But with the year’s biggest party coming up tomorrow night, I couldn’t resist going glam with this piece. I had spotted this faux fur stole in the Anthro catalogue a few months back and have been dreaming of it ever since – so when it went on major sale I scooped it up. It’s a serious statement piece, but one that can still get plenty of wear throughout the winter (…unlike those sequin mini dresses I’ve bought for New Year’s past). Tomorrow I’ll be showing you another – completely different – way to wear it, so be sure to check back!
