If I could only wear one type of outfit all Fall (in I don’t know – some bizarre Handmaid’s Tale-esque alternate reality) it would be an oversized sweater and plaid mini skirt like this one. It strikes a balance between cute and comfortable and has that slightly 60s vibe I’m always shooting for. Which felt especially right for a day exploring Notting Hill a couple of weeks ago in London.

Lately I’ve been adding tights to this look and a teddy coat (because brrr) but regardless I’m planning on wearing some variation of this outfit straight into winter.  For days at the office, weekend movie dates and everything in between. Including daydreaming about being back in Notting Hill.

PLAID BOYFRIEND SHIRT AND SLIP-ON ANKLE BOOTS

Nordstrom Plaid Boyfriend Shirt and Fossil Leather Tassel Bag

Wait – where did the weekend go?! Adam and I were busy all over town, and then out of town, shooting a bunch of holiday content that I can’t wait to share with you all (you’ll want to tune in on November 14th). So while I didn’t do much relaxing, I did wear this relaxed outfit on Saturday afternoon which involved my softest plaid boyfriend shirt and these comfy slip-on ankle boots.

BELL SLEEVE TOP AND DENIM MINISKIRT

The Steele Maiden: Bell Sleeve Top and Topshop Denim Zip front Miniskirt

I’m all for the fact that denim skirts have made a valiant return to fashion in the past couple of years. I admittedly already own 2 knee length button front versions, but when I saw this zip front miniskirt version I figured it was just different enough to justify the purchase. And since you can never go wrong with a ‘jeans and tee’ kind of look – I added this white t-shirt with bell sleeves. P.S. I’m calling it now.. dramatic sleeves are the new ‘off the shoulder’ for this Fall.

SPRING SHIRTS AND BLOUSES

Every year around this time I try to do a major spring closet cleaning. I unpack my warm weather clothes (kept packed away neatly in cloth baskets on higher shelves all winter) and take a look at what I really loved from the season prior and what I never did get around to wearing. Then I make a keep/donate/sell sorting system and re-stock my closet from there. It feels great not only to rid myself of things I’ve hung on to for too long (and give them to a new home), but it also serves as a clear indicator of what I truly need. Since spring shopping tends to have me all – dresses! heels! – it’s good to be able to truly asses what I need before I even think of adding something new. I tackled the challenge a couple of weekends ago and what I noticed I really need are neutral, go with jeans on a Saturday or a nice pencil skirt on a Tuesday, kind of shirts and blouses. Here – a few of the ones that caught my eye – all of them less than $100, but most of them less than $50!

SUMMER TO FALL STYLE

How to Style: Summer to Fall transition pieces

I’m in that tricky timeframe where I’m craving Fall items – but don’t want to buy anything that I’ll have to wait 2 months to wear (which is the adult version of wanting to go back to school shopping but not wanting to have to start classes again). To help combat this conundrum, I’m only investing in pieces right now that can be worn right away with lightweight Summer pieces and then re-styled later once the weather starts to turn. Here – a breakdown of the top items on my list:

The Frill Hem Top – I love the swingy-ness and easy khaki color of this one. I’d wear it now with cut-off jean shorts and later with skinny denim and a killer pair of over the knee boots.

The Button Front Skirt – the official skirt of the season pairs nicely with a printed off the shoulder top for Summer and a slim knit turtleneck for Fall vibes.

The Suede Ankle Boot – I’ve never met a stacked heel I didn’t love – this pair toughens up a girly little white dress for August date nights and in September works with boyfriend jeans and a cashmere scarf on weekends.

The Floral Midi Dress – This one is lightweight enough to wear even on a hot day with flat lace-ups, and will look effortless in a few months paired with a leather jacket and wide brim wool hat.

The 70s Inspired Accessories – These round, tortoise sunglasses and quilted, burgundy bag are easy additions to a simple striped t-shirt dress and will still make sense months from now with a cropped sweater, maxi skirt and chelsea boots. (p.s. I just tried my first pair of Illesteva sunglasses through Ditto – an online boutique that offers endless designer glasses for just $19 – meaning you can try out a cool new shape/brand or trade in for a different pair before you commit to buying!
