There’s something about this city in the heat of summer that makes everything pulse with energy. Days are longer, nights are later, and everyone is running around everywhere with just an extra ounce of sass. I live for it.

I’ve been working these past couple of years to build a wardrobe that feels classic but not boring, modern but not dated, and largely interchangeable for day or night, work or play. All of the pieces I’m wearing meet those discerning requirements. Last Summer I often paired this pinstripe top with a pencil skirt at the office, but this past weekend I pulled it back out for a date night with a faux-leather mini skirt instead. Which I last paired with sneakers and a crewneck sweatshirt for brunch. And these elastic strap heels have been paired with everything from ripped denim to floral dresses. See what I mean?

Which would have been lovely on it’s own – but add to it the first weekend of near 70 degree weather and it was pretty much perfect. I packed my favorite new wide brim straw boater hat and easy white eyelet skirt – both of which ended up being just the thing for a casual Sunday afternoon among the wildflowers.

Sure, I had to pair it with jeans – and a not pictured coat – but it had been burning a hole in my closet ever since I picked it up at the Ramy Brook showroom last week.. so you know, practically an eternity.

As evidenced on this blog countless times, a denim jacket is my go-to when it comes to lightweight jackets. Sure, there’s been a blazer or a cargo jacket here and there, but for the most part I stick to the basics. But sometimes you want something that feels a little more interesting, something cooler than the usual suspects. Enter – the kimono. The spring jacket you definitely don’t already have in your closet, and definitely need.
