POLKA DOTS AT THE PALAIS-ROYAL

You know how sometimes a place becomes heavily photographed on Instagram and then when you actually go, it’s not quite as nice as everyone’s photos make it out to be? The Palais-Royal isn’t like that. I had actually come to this spot back in 2008 on my first trip to Paris (armed with just a digital camera) and remember loving the grandness of the old French courtyard and gardens set against the graphic pop of these raised columns at varied heights. So I knew I wanted to swing back through on this trip. Although I have to say, I don’t remember what I wore back in 2008 but this may be my favorite outfit I wore on our whole trip.

I actually bought this polka dot midi dress back in March for my girl’s trip to Charleston with my Mom and Sister (it makes me think of a cross between Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby and Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman), but I knew it was destined to make an appearance in Paris too. I stepped it up a bit with these cute little polka dot flats too which I picked up as a replacement to a similar gingham pair that I wore to shreds over the past couple of years.

FLORAL MIDI DRESS IN CENTRAL PARK

The Steele Maiden: Central Park in Summer - Floral Midi Dress

There is something about Central Park in the summer that really is magic. New Yorkers bumping past tourists, picnics on the Great Lawn, entertainers buzzing through Bethesda Fountain… I love it all.

SHOP THE STORY

I love that Central Park has remained virtually unchanged for the past 150 years. Meaning a century’s worth of New Yorker’s have similar summer memories. I’ll always remember Summer in Central Park like it was this past Sunday – a perfect 80 degrees, filled with the sounds of happy voices, wandering about in the most perfect floral midi dress and then pitching a blanket on the hill beside the lake (mainly so that Adam and I could laugh about the people rowing their boats backwards and bumping into one another). Speaking of this dress – I love it too and filmed ‘how to wear it 3 ways’ for IGTV. Thinking this  could be a fun way to show things easily that I otherwise don’t have time to photograph quite as grandly as when the Plaza Hotel is looming in the background.

FALL FLORAL MIDI DRESS WITH OLD NAVY

The Steele Maiden: Fall Floral Maxi with Old Navy

I think I’ve been dreaming of this dress subliminally since about July. There are a million dark floral dresses out there for Fall but some are too bright, too fancy or too busy. This one is like the Goldilocks of fall floral dresses. Just right.

SHOP THE STORY

It has long sleeves and an elastic waist (meaning it’s as comfortable as they come, even after all the apple cider donuts I ate before we took these photos) and the print is even better in person. I’m not lying when I say no less than 5 people complimented me on this dress since I got it. Also would be lying if I said I hadn’t already worn it 3 times since I got it last week. It’s going to be great layered under a suede jacket or over a thin knit turtleneck too once the weather gets chilly. And if all of that isn’t enough to convince you – it’s from Old Navy which means the price is right.

P.S. Thank you to everyone who took my polls on Instagram Stories about what type of content you’d like to see more of! And for those who didn’t get a chance – feel free to drop me a line to let me know! So far, the votes are for more everyday style, office wear, hair & beauty and NYC life. Excited to bring you more of what you want!

CLASSIC NAVY SATCHEL HANDBAG

The Steele Maiden: Classic Navy Handbag

Generally speaking, I find myself drawn to smaller crossbody bags most of the time. Easier to keep my hands free and only tote around the necessities. But every once in awhile you just really need a classic satchel handbag. You know the kind. Grown-up women carry them. They’re for job interviews and meeting the parents and – in this case – strolling the Upper East Side. Even if the inside of that thing is a total mess – someone looks at you carrying that bag and they think you’ve got your shit together. It feels nice to have a bag like that in your arsenal.

FLORAL MIDI DRESS AND NAVY STRAW HAT

The Steele Maiden: Floral eyelet midi dress and navy wide brim straw hat

‘Actually, the best gift you could have give her was a lifetime of adventures…’

I love that quote by Lewis Carroll. Adam and I agreed from the beginning of our relationship that we’d rather spend money on shared travels than gifting each other ‘things’ for holidays and birthdays. There just isn’t a pair of designer shoes in the world that I’d prefer over you know.. seeing the actual world. So for my 30th birthday we went back to Charleston (a city we’d briefly stopped through on our drive cross country in 2012) and as a gift on the last day, Adam surprised me with details of our next trip. Hint.. it’s a big one! Here’s to a lifetime of adventures.
