I’ve always been admittedly obsessed with magazines (a big part of me wanting this blog was to basically be the editor of my own little daily “magazine”), and certain editorial spreads remain in my memory long after the fact.  The above image is from a years old issue of Marie Claire and something about Ashley Olsen in this sort of undone state just kind of always captivated me.  I miss the lost art of getting ready as a glamourous event (hair in rollers, sitting at a vanity applying powder..).  This weekend I’m planning on getting ready and taking a few editorial shots myself – and while I’m not making any promises, I hope to make real life outfit styling a weekly feature.  Happy Friday!

After glimpsing inside Holly Thomas of Refinery 29’s gorgeously cozy home, I couldn’t help but wish for an equally cold weather friendly abode.  Until then, I’ll settle for an outfit that incorporates all the same elements.. 




In the home Holly shares with her boyfriend, natural finishes play a prominent role (translate wood and leather into tortoiseshell accessories like this Fossil watch).  A classic palette of reds, whites, and blues is kept from feeling predictable with loads of playful vintage charm (pretty much everything from Lauren Moffatt sums this up, but the above look gets it particularly right).  And finally, I love that this home is unapologetically dark and masculine, without feeling uninviting (go for classic, borrowed from the boys loafers – these from Dolce Vita fit the bill).

New Orleans, Louisiana.

I’ve had the chance to visit New Orleans twice now and it remains one of the most unique places I’ve ever been.  A captivating melting pot of old world charm (iron gates and hidden gardens), rich mixed culture (eat just one meal there and you’ll understand) and wild excess (bourbon street and beyond). The French Quarter is easily walkable, and I suggest that you do it with a drink in hand (good for fitting in and bearing crowds).  From po’boys to beignets, Nola begs to be over consumed (avoid tourist traps and go to Jacques Imos – get the alligator cheesecake and a local Abita beer).  Once you’ve had your fill of the Quarter, head Uptown to the beautiful Garden District and shopping-centric Magazine Street (indulgence of a different kind).  And when you finally decide to call it a night, get some peace and quiet at one of the many charming Inns (we stayed at Ashton’s B&B and enjoyed seriously delicious breakfast, perfect for soaking up the previous nights damage).  If you haven’t already, visit New Orleans – just make sure you’re not on a diet that week.
