weekend flashback

The Steele Maiden: Weekend FlashbackCan you believe that Christmas is in just a couple of days?!  We’ve got a pretty low key holiday planned, no travel, no huge meal.  Just a day spent the two of us and a few thoughtful gifts, maybe a trip to the movie theater and most likely some take out food.  And honestly, I’m pretty excited about it.  While I’ll miss being back home on the East Coast (and the chance of a white Christmas), sometimes the simplest of holidays are the ones that you look back on as the best.  I started a new tradition this past Thanksgiving but want to think of something for Christmas too.  What are some of your favorite traditions?  And if you’re traveling in the next couple of days, good luck and have a safe trip!

london girls

The Steele Maiden: London Girls
While my overall style usually remains pretty consistent, throughout the year I always find myself looking to different points of inspiration.  For instance in the Fall, I only want to look like New York girls – fresh faced and running from show to show at Fashion Week.  And if my time in LA has taught me anything, it’s that no one does Summer style better than those California girls.  And I think it goes without saying that the peak of trés chic is Paris in the Spring.  But when it comes to Winter?  I’d venture to argue that it’s London girls that get it right.  Maybe it’s because it was Winter when I studied abroad there, but British girls have a knack for this sort of layered, tousled on purpose, school girl meets skate punk look that you just don’t see anywhere else.  See here: blazer, crewneck sweater and oxford collar mixed with beanie, flared mini and metallic ankle boots.  Now if only I could get back that accent I had gotten so good at faking…

prints and perks

The Steele Maiden: Prints and Perks
These printed jeans continue to be the most surprising item in my wardrobe.  One of the few times an impulse, trendy buy (I’m usually a fairly calculated shopper) turned out to be something that I get tons of wear out of.  They add the perfect amount of punch to an otherwise pretty simple look.  Another surprise? The fact that I was able to get a few more wears – in December no less! – of my open toe shoes.  Only in LA.  This sweater (last seen here) has also quickly earned it’s place as a closet staple and I’d be lying if I said I haven’t worn it at least once a week lately.  The bold print and fuzzy texture pretty much make the look here but I couldn’t resist adding one of my favorite vintage bags and this lovely little amethyst necklace.

that 70’s show

The Steele Maiden: That 70's Show
I love a piece that already feels like it has a story to it when you get it, and this coat felt like a really cool find from the 70’s that I could have picked up in a thrift shop somewhere (in reality I got it for practically pennies at my company sample sale).  I love the boxy shape, subdued stripes and oversized patch pockets that meant I didn’t even have to carry a purse to run my errands this particular day.  In another case of lucky finds, we turned the corner of this street and there sat a perfectly matching Chevy truck – this one real vintage – that was too good not to include.  Adam (the boy behind the camera) happens to love cars in the way that I love shoes so these pictures are basically a very fitting combination of us.

tiny dancer

The Steele Maiden: Tiny Dancer
I didn’t expect to be back in bare legs in the middle of December, but when the weather hit the mid 70’s this weekend I embraced it by pulling out this tutu of a skirt and skipping around town in an unapologetically girly outfit.  I also make no apologies for wearing this scarf when it’s warm enough for bare legs.  One touch of this seriously soft faux fur and you’d be hard pressed to take it off too.  Plus, it added to the whole ballerina look I had going in layers of softs tans, whites, and greys – a look I love for winter as a means of breaking up the sea of black and navy usually seen on the streets.  For those of you who are surrounded by winter whites right now (the snow that is), I’d add charcoal grey tights and booties with a bit more stability – and of course closed toes! – and twirl your way through the storm.
