bright bloom

The Steele Maiden: Floral dress date night styleWhile the Summer seems to be flying by (I mean how is it the end of July already?), I’m trying to slow things down by embracing distinctly Summer styles.  Like this bright, feminine floral dress perfect for a spontaneous midweek date night.  The dress teeters on the edge of being too girly for my style – but I love how the bold black trim, cool collar detail, and plunging neckline adds a little bit of edge to balance things out.  Holding on to nights, weather and dresses like these until Fall edges its way in eventually.p.s. street talk

The Steele Maiden: New York City street style
On Saturday we were packed and ready to head to Rockaway Beach before realizing the clouds probably just weren’t going to clear.  If you’ve ever had the deeply depressing experience of thinking you were headed to the beach (I’m talking bathing suit on) then you’ll have an idea of how I felt on Saturday.  Because I’m lucky to have found someone who instantly knows how to cheer me up, Adam insisted I get changed into some of my favorite items (currently, this denim mini skirt and always, this vintage bag) and that we wander aimlessly around downtown.  Two hours of walking later we’d found a newly opened book shop in our neighborhood, possibly the cutest street ever in the West Village, witnessed an arrest (for balance right?) and talked until I forgot all about the beach.  That’s the thing about a change of outfit, it can change your mood completely.

party pants

The Steele Maiden: Printed Jumpsuit
Aside from matching sets, printed jumpsuits were one of the trends I was most excited to try this Summer.  I dipped my toes into the trend a month ago with this blue and white, casual version – but when I spied this watercolor inspired floral print version from UK-based brand Little Mistress, I figured why not go all in?  Paired with this tuxedo vest and disco ball drop earrings the outfit is perfect for partying your way through a girl’s night out.  It’s definitely not my typical skirt/top combo (and to be honest, it’s one of those slightly intimidating looks that is probably a total man repeller), but you can’t argue that you’d be the life of the party in pants like these.

walking on sunshine

The Steele Maiden: Neon Sweater and Printed Shorts
If you’re ever feeling down, I suggest you walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and wander about 2 blocks South until you stumble into this smile-inducing, sunglasses-required, surface of the sun-hued, mural wall.  In fact, I think the only thing brighter than this block was my neon sweater, printed shorts and green bag – because you know, why stop at one bold color in Summer, right?  I last wore these shorts here (in a decidedly more tame manner) and have had this neon yellow lightweight sweater since college (full disclosure – I can’t stand to part with it because it strongly enhances whatever tan I’ve acquired by the time I pull it down from the back of my closet each year) – but this past weekend, pairing them together suddenly seemed like a great idea.  A few simple gold accessories and a block’s worth of color splashed bricks and I was walking on sunshine the rest of the day.

uptown girl

The Steele Maiden: Little Mistress mini dress and nude heelsSomewhere around the age of 21 when Gossip Girl was still in its first couple of seasons and Blair Waldorf still ruled the Met steps, I decided when I moved to New York the following Summer I would have to live on the Upper East Side.  Of course, the legends of Holly Golightly and Carrie Bradshaw had come before her, but it was Blair in her perfectly crisp dresses and well suited accessories that sealed the deal.  These days, I’ve traded uptown for downtown and my style has considerably evolved.  But over the weekend when I joined my best friend for an afternoon browsing the latest exhibits at the Met, I fell right back into old habits with this eyelet front shift dress, coordinating daisy cuff and perfectly pastel accessories.  She arrived wearing a backless, floaty maxi dress and casually slung Marc Jacobs bag.. still the Serena to my Blair.

p.s. If you love this dress as much as I do, you’re in luck.  I’m hosting a $100 giveaway to shop Little Mistress over on my Twitter page – so be sure to check it out!
