merry and bright

The Steele Maiden: Christmas Outfit with Plaid Blanket Scarf ASOS midi skirt
There is just one week until Christmas (which I still can’t fully believe) and I plan to soak up every second of it.  Like wearing this outfit.. which is basically the most merry and bright I can possibly get without wearing a full out Mrs. Claus costume. I first wore this green midi skirt with a cobalt blue sleeveless top during Fall Fashion Week (here) but I switched it out for a sweater this time and then played up the holiday vibes with this oversized plaid blanket scarf.  Full disclosure – I had no idea how to properly wear this around my neck until yesterday morning when I came up with this shawl meets scarf version, tied it in a knot, and finished it off with a cute brooch.  And then New York, with it’s fresh garland, trimmed trees and bright red doors – did the rest of the work.

The Steele Maiden: Leopard Coat and Suede Shorts
I’ve  been talking about how important it is to have a ‘coat wardrobe’ now that winter has hit the East Coast (this one and this one are recent examples), since for several months that’s basically all you get to see of an outfit – and this leopard one has put me over the top. I’ve been searching for some version of this exact coat for literally years now, so when I found this one at H&M during a pre-Black Friday sale I had to scoop it up.  It’s decidedly statement making but also just neutral enough to mix well with other colors, like these burgundy suede shorts and printed blouse.  In a sea of black coats – sometimes it’s nice to be easily spotted in a crowd.

the heart of it

The Steele Maiden: Times Square NYC in lace romper and Loren Hope earrings
This week marks 10 years since the first time I stepped foot in this city.. and in that very first instant I knew my whole life was about to change (6 years and 9 days later the sight of something would stop me in my tracks again.. but instead of skyscrapers it was a 6’2″ boy).  On its bad days, this city is madness. I have cried on subway trains, fallen into streets, suffered bad jobs, bad apartments bad break-ups, and once even stepped on a rat. But on its best days, this city is total magic. So to celebrate, I headed back to Times Square and of course, dressed up a little for the occasion. This black lace romper and statement earring combo is a no-fail date night look – whether it’s your first date or you’re falling in love all over again.

winter warmth

The Steele Maiden: Striped Wool Coat and Fur Pom Beanie
I’m starting to build a real coat wardrobe these days and it’s a good thing, because temperatures are steadily falling (along with some snowflakes!). The start to any warm outfit is the first layers and since you usually only get to see a peak of them under all the other outerwear – I like to make it count in a rich color or great print.  This bright orange, long sleeved sweater dress from online boutique Red Clover does just that. Then come the layers – tights, socks (I like the added contrast here plus keeps my toes from freezing!), gloves, the fur pom beanie I’ve had on repeat, and finally this real standout of a coat.

The Steele Maiden: Rainy Day Style in Hunter Boots and Paige Denim
By yesterday afternoon things had turned into a winter wonderland of snowflakes, but for the past few days it’s been a whole lot of rain here in New York.  I can’t pretend I love commuting to work in a downpour, but last Saturday when everyone was hiding inside and the streets were quiet – the city felt like a movie scene. Adam and I walked through an all but deserted Washington Square Park, umbrellas in hand and managed to snap a few quick photos.  Since it wasn’t super cold I took the chance to wear a lighter jacket, plus this cashmere scarf (how have I never owned a cashmere scarf?! This one is like a cloud around my neck) and a light sweater. I have been wearing a lot of traditional holiday colors lately (this is a prime example) and I thought it would be fun to put a different spin on it – so instead of cherry red and forest green, I wore soft pink and light mint. Plus black on black on black. Because, I may be a romantic.. but I’m also a New Yorker.
