HOW TO PLAN THE PERFECT STAY-CATION: WITH THE OMNI BERKSHIRE HOTEL

This past weekend Adam and I had one of those truly great, seriously unforgettable New York weekends. From Saturday to Sunday we deemed ourselves officially on ‘stay-cation’ – left our tiny downtown apartment behind, packed our bags and headed uptown to check into the gorgeous Omni Berkshire Hotel.

And while we only went about 40 blocks north of our home, it felt a world away. This trick to a stay-cation (or really any good vacation) is to indulge in the things you can’t do at home. Here – tips on how to plan the perfect stay-cation plus exactly what we did with our 24 hours at the Omni Berkshire. I promise, you’ll be wanting to hit ‘book‘ by the time you get to the end of this post.

On Saturday afternoon, we checked in to the Omni with an armful of fresh flowers and our bags. There’s something that felt so nice about just taking a cab uptown as opposed to the hassle of an airport. While our apartment has a double bed and about 2 good hours of sunlight.. our King Premier room on the top floor was flooded with natural sunlight and came with a sprawling private terrace. We quickly made ourselves at home.

Our bathroom at home is tiny and I’m not kidding when I tell you I screamed to Adam when I walked into this one. The size of the tub alone! Travel can be tough on skin (and your body in general), but the great part about a stay-cation is that you can really use the time to pamper yourself. I brought my favorite eye and face mask and while I applied them on Sunday morning, Adam ran out to get us coffee and came back with a giant bottle of bubbles so that I could take an hour long bath getting lost in a sea of foam. I swear I haven’t felt that relaxed in about a year.

But back to Saturday night and that terrace! Private outdoor space is such a rarity in New York – whether you live here or are searching for a hotel here. So the terrace was already a serious treat… and then came the movie. This summer the Omni Berkshire is screening family friendly flicks every Friday night on their main terrace (no matter what room you’re staying in). But since we were there on a Saturday night – they brought the movie to us! With a big screen TV and the city below us adding to the soundtrack, we snacked on picnic treats, popped sparkling rosé and pinched ourselves with how good this whole thing was. If you stay at the Omni you can use your own terrace for a romantic dinner delivered from their on-site steakhouse, morning yoga (they’ll bring you up a mat and towel), or splurge and treat yourself to the same one-of-a-kind movie experience. Or you can just stand there with a glass of bubbly and toast to the magic of the city around you.

After our movie, we knew we wanted to use Saturday night to take advantage of the Omni’s prime location. Living downtown we don’t head uptown as much as we should – but with the Omni being so close to all the major theaters, museums and tourist hot-spots we jumped at the chance to grab tickets to the Ballet! And naturally came back after a few hours of being awed by the jaw-dropping talent of the American Ballet Theater to eat grilled cheese and sliders in our fancy clothes at Bob’s, the hotel bar. Because it’s all about balance people. Then we sat and watched the lights and sounds of the city below on our balcony until jumping into that cloud of a king sized bed.

The next morning, post bubble bath, we ate breakfast and soaked up the morning sun on our balcony. And despite our begging the Omni Berkshire concierge (the sweetest staff!) to let us move in – at noon we checked out and headed back downtown feeling as rested and refreshed as if we’d had a week’s vacation. And it goes without saying but, more in love with this city than ever. A good stay-cation will do that to you.
