LUXE TEXTURES FOR FALL: CASHMERE, VELVET AND FAUX FUR

The Steele Maiden: Luxe Textures for Fall - Velvet Jeggings, Cashmere Sweater and Faux Fur Plaid Vest

One of my favorite things about Fall fashion are all the luxe textures. And this outfit from Talbots I wore on our first day in Edinburgh checks off all my favorites. A classic cashmere sweater, velvet jeggings and faux fur vest. Not to mention plaid on plaid (when in Scotland.. do as the Scots do, right?).

SHOP THE STORY

I like that all together it feels simple but because of the mix of rich textures it also feels super chic. It’s exactly the sort of thing I would wear to the office and then straight out afterwards for an event or holiday drinks this season. Plus, the fact that they’re separates means that you could also add any of them to a more casual look to elevate the whole thing. And can we talk about these velvet jeggings?? I know, I felt skeptical at first too but then I tried them on and proceeded to wear them on 3 separate occasions during our 10 day trip. They come in a bunch of colors but I’m loving the ivory color. Tomorrow I’ll be sharing an entirely different way to wear them.

P.S. This area in Edinburgh was called Dean Village and was truly like stepping back in time. Can’t wait to tell you more about our short but sweet time in Scotland.

NIGHT OUT IN LONDON: LEOPARD RUFFLE DRESS

The Steele Maiden: London Night Out Style - Leopard Ruffle Dress, Fisherman's Cap and Patent Booties

London calling! As we speak, I’ve made it back to New York and am fighting off a cold and jet lag (no easy feat) – but also am so excited to share with you all the places we went and naturally, all the things I wore. This look is from our first night out in London and one of my favorites from the whole trip.

SHOP THE STORY

We headed to Camden Town (kind of the East Village of London if you will, and where I lived when I studied abroad there for a semester) for a night out and ended up grabbing last minute tickets to London’s Jazz Cafe where they were playing a tribute to Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks album. I’ve been a huge Van Morrison fan since high school so I was hoping they’d do the album justice… and was literally blown away. So good that Adam and I still haven’t stopped talking about it. Then it was a few more drinks, a little dancing and back to our first AirBnB of the trip to collapse into jet lag. For the record I don’t recommend this big of a night for your first day adjusting to a new time zone, but I also don’t regret it one bit.

This leopard ruffle dress (under $40!) and patent booties held up through it all and hopefully helped fit in with the British girls who just always look so effortlessly cool. Also, carried my vintage YSL clutch that is one of my most prized purchases from the vintage markets in Camden Town – bought almost exactly 10 years ago. How’s that for full circle?

A TRAVEL GUIDE TO NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

The Steele Maiden: Travel Guide to Newport, Rhode Island

A couple of weeks ago (very much burnt out on work and needing a bit of an escape), Adam and I decided on a last minute trip to Newport, Rhode Island. I’d been wanting to visit for ages, and with the summer tourists cleared out but the weather still nice we decided to go for it. Let’s just say – it won’t be our last visit to this town.

WHERE TO GO HOUSE-HUNTING:

If you regularly troll the #Ihavethisthingwithdoors Instagram feed, then you’re going to want to take a walk through historic Thames Street. Right into town when you come off the Jamestown Bridge, we parked the car and strolled along the beautiful old homes tucked into narrow side streets before heading further down Thames Street to the main midtown area of Newport.

SHOPPING & EATING ALONG THE HARBOR:

Along the harbor you’ll find lots of cute boutiques to pop in and out of plus enough restaurants and bars to keep you full. We walked along the harbor for a bit before grabbing lunch at Diego’s (a Mexican restaurant with great margaritas and unexpected menu combos). The next evening we had a standout meal at Midtown Oysters (Adam’s vote for best lobster roll of the summer!).

THINGS TO DO:

A visit to Newport feels like it wouldn’t be complete without a tour of one of the many mansions. Leftovers from the Gilded Age – these homes were the ‘summer cottages’ of some of the wealthiest families in America. We toured The Breakers (once home to the Vanderbilts) but we heard good things about The Elms, Marble House and Rosecliff. Stunning interiors and architecture, a bit of history and a great activity if you end up having a rainy afternoon too!

After touring The Breakers, we headed just north up the coast to the Cliff Walk. With 3 miles of rocky cliffs to hike along, this is a beautiful way to take in Rhode Island’s coastline. The next day – we saw the western coast by taking a scenic drive along Ocean Drive (also known as ‘Ten Mile Drive’). Peppered with glimpses of gorgeous homes and stunning views of the coastal beaches – this drive nearly topped our similar memories of Malibu – which says a lot.

The drive ended with a trip to Castle Hill Inn,  a hotel property that sits on a hill overlooking the water and Jamestown Bridge to the north. While they have a full restaurant inside, it’s their lawn area offering full drink service (note: this perk is closed in the late fall/winter)  that was a highlight of our trip. Adirondack chairs are first come first serve, and we ended up with front row seats to watch the sailboats go by while sipping local beers. A perfect end to a weekend in Newport.

3 MUST HAVE COATS FOR FALL TRAVEL

The Steele Maiden - 3 Must Have Coats for Fall Travel

This past weekend, Adam and I took a last minute trip to Rhode Island. I’d only been to the state once before (to Providence in the depths of winter.. so I had a lot to make up for) and Adam had never been – so we were excited to jump into Newport on a crisp Fall weekend and expand from there (full travel guide coming soon!).

We were only in Rhode Island for about 36 hours in total so I did my best to pack light. And while Fall is one of my favorite times to travel, it can definitely be tricky to know exactly what to bring with you. In one weekend alone we had chilly mornings, warm sunny afternoons and a few hours that were windy with heavy rain. With that in mind, I teamed up with Lands’ End (one of my favorite sources for all weather outerwear), to share 3 must have coats for Fall Travel.

The Steele Maiden - 3 Must Have Coats for Fall Travel

1. THE PUFFER COAT: Heavy enough to keep you warm on brisk Autumn mornings, but lightweight enough to add layers and easily roll into your suitcase or weekender bag, the puffer coat is essential. I love that this one feels as pretty as it is practical with a roll collar and floral print. Even more fun when you mix it with classic stripes.

2. THE RAINCOAT: Tucked in your car’s backseat or your carry-on, if you’re headed out of town this Fall you probably shouldn’t leave home without a raincoat. This one is super thin so there’s no excuse not to bring it along and I can’t tell you how happy I was to have it when it started pouring and we were still a quarter mile from the car.

3. THE TRENCH COAT: A completely season-less, wardrobe staple the trench coat is perfect for a million situations including your Fall travel. Not only is it a great in-between weight (not too light, not too heavy), a trench coat works just as well with jeans and a sweater as it does with a cocktail dress and heels. Meaning you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck and space in your suitcase.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR COUPLES

The Steele Maiden: Travel Tips for Couples

We’ve all seen it (or been the ones ourselves) – the couple fighting at baggage claim or pulled off to the side of the road looking angrily at a map. What is it about travel that can bring out the worst in a couple? Adam and I don’t claim to never ever fight while traveling, but after 6+ years and countless trips together I like to think we’ve hit our stride. And since I often share the perfectly posed ‘after’ photos of our vacations.. I thought I’d share a more personal look at how we travel together in the hopes that it may save you from being the one in that baggage claim fight next time. Below, our best advice:

GETTING THERE IS HALF THE FUN –

Okay, okay, so your 12 hour flight to Hawaii probably isn’t going to be as fun as laying on the beach with a daiquiri in hand.. but if you go into it dreading the actual ‘travel’ part of the trip I promise you’re going to be way more likely to be in a bad mood and probably end up picking a fight. Or just being a lame travel partner. Plus, in the case of our 2 cross country road trips, getting there really was the fun. So just embrace it and choose to start your vacation the minute you walk out your front door.

We’ve still got bottle rockets in our trunk from that detour to South of the Border and cry laughing thinking of the time we nearly missed our connection in Prague and got a lecture from the flight attendant about being late. Your favorite memories may just end up being in the ‘getting there’.

ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES –

Despite your best laid plans.. I promise you, things are going to go wrong. You’re going to actually miss a flight connection, get a flat tire, arrive to the hotel only to end up hating the property, The photo on the beach at the beginning of this post? Our camera fell off the tripod minutes later and the lens broke. On our last trip to Los Angeles I spent a night in the Emergency Room hooked up to an IV (after catching a terrible stomach bug) with Adam curled up in a tiny chair beside me. Our king sized bed and hotel room only a few miles away.

It’s all in how you deal with it. And for Adam and I that means as a team. Even if frustrations are high, we try not to take it out on each other (easier said than done if either of us is ‘hangry’) and come up with the best/quickest/cheapest/whatever solution. Then get back to the fun stuff. Do you really want to spend your entire vacation sulking over the fact that your baggage was delayed for a day?

WHO YOU ARE AT HOME IS WHO YOU ARE ON VACATION –

I’ve heard this more than once with couples I know – they go on vacation and all of a sudden one partner thinks that the other would want to go white water rafting or zip lining or shopping at luxury boutiques  all day. And, because the other is not at all the type of person who would ever want to actually do this, they begrudgingly go along with it and it ends in a fight (or in my sister’s case, tears on her honeymoon – what my brother in law was thinking with that hike when all she had packed was flip-flops – and hates hiking – I’ll never know…).

For example – Adam loves cars, so it would silly for me to get frustrated when we’re in a foreign country and he’s stopping every 10 feet to take photos of rare cars he’s never seen before. Likewise, I love laying on the beach but it’s not really Adam’s thing. So he’ll let me get extra time on the beach by being the one that leaves to go pick up lunch or run back to the hotel for a change of clothes. Sure, we’re traveling, but we are who we are – and you have to just respect that.

ALLOW TIME TO CONNECT –

Travel can be stressful and often feels like ‘high stakes’ – you spent $xxx on this vacation so you have to pack every moment full of sight-seeing and Instagram-worthy adventures. But we’ve found that as a couple, travel works best when it’s a balance of relaxing time spent really connecting and time spent exploring. So we’ll leave ourselves a morning or two to wake up slowly and hang out in the hotel room, or skip a night of checking out local bars for a bubble bath and movies in a king-sized bed (since we don’t have a bathtub or a big bed at home) instead. Then the next day hit the ground running.

The Steele Maiden: Travel Tips for Couples

BE GRATEFUL –

Honestly I think one of reasons that Adam and I have such a great time traveling together is because we never forget how grateful we are to do it. There were years in our early twenties when we were way too broke to travel (although even then we managed to pack picnic lunches and take day trips) so now that we have the opportunity to see the world together we feel lucky to do so. I hope I’m never standing next to this person that I love in the midst of a beautiful far-flung city bickering about some silly thing. What a waste of a gift.

And lastly, just for fun – a few travel selfies:

1st row (L): In Amsterdam, after a few cheap beers (R): En route to Montreal, sleepy

2nd row (L): In Miami, slightly sunburnt (R): In Charleston, swatting away mosquitos

3rd row (L): In Copenhagen, jet lagged (R): In Maine, battling the wind
