Seeing Stripes.

I love black and white year round, but I find myself reaching for the pair constantly when transitioning between the jewel tones of Winter and the bright pastels of Spring.  Once combined in a graphic stripe they look put together and crisp, even when you got ready in just a few minutes (because the time change is still really throwing you off)…

If you’re looking for a way to see stripes of your own, here’s a few affordable (and particularly cute) options:

Nest: I love all of the office supplies at See Jane Work – and I’m convinced that this letter sorter would help me to maintain my mail like a proper adult. Plus, how wonderfully would this match with the white Parson’s desk and clear ghost chair that I already have?  A $7.99 necessity if you ask me.

Dressed: Have you heard about JC Penney’s latest collaboration with Canadian brand Joe Fresh?  They offer modern, stylish basics at great prices – and now JCP (as their rebranding efforts prefer them to be called) is bringing our Northern neighbors right to your local mall.  I love their selection of crisp button downs and wear to work dresses.  This striped number is quite perfect, eh?

The Rest:  I’m a sucker for good packaging, and aside from the array of lovely color choices, the striped casing on this lipstick from Topshop makes it nearly impossible to resist.  I’m loving bright pink lip colors for Spring (added bonus – hot pink is a no brainer paired with black and white stripes, so feel free to add a pop of your own)

Weekend Flashback.

Weekend-Flashback-Blog-Recap-InstagramMy parents arrived on Saturday morning (after a long work week that’s completion was celebrated with wearing a fun pair of shoes to grab a drink at a local spot) and we spent the rest of the weekend showing them as much of Southern California as two days would allow.  This included a few places that have been on my own list of things to see since moving here – Griffith Observatory (in the shadow of the Hollywood sign and nestled in the picturesque Griffith Park) where we looked through at the moon in NASA worthy telescopes and saw all of Los Angeles lit up at night.  And Point Dume, a moderate hike in Malibu that leads up to a cliff point, allowing for views of the Pacific as far as the eye can see.  Add in trips to a few of my favorite local restaurants and a little light shopping, and you pretty much have a perfect weekend.

Green Day.

While I’m not the biggest celebrator of St. Patrick’s Day, as last mentioned here – I am a big fan of the color Emerald.  So as you’re out getting Irish this weekend, I’m going to be thrilled to be showing my parents my new home of Southern California (they get into town Saturday morning!).  And perhaps celebrating in a more subtle way by wearing a hint of Emerald (although I love the idea of a monochromatic mix a la J.Crew).  Whatever your plans, paint the town green.  Happy Friday!
PS. Happy Birthday to one of my biggest fans and most faithful readers – see you tomorrow Dad!

Brand New.

What is it about the changing of the seasons that makes you want to go shopping again?  In Southern California it seems that we’ve nearly skipped Spring and headed straight into Summer, but I’m not complaining.  Instead I’m planning on embracing it – and if I only get to splurge on one brand new item, I’m going to make it count…

In case you haven’t heard – Kate Spade is about to go from wildly popular to total retail domination.  The brand is set to launch their diffusion line ‘Saturday’ which will run at a lower price point and target a slightly younger demographic.  As a designer I pretty much appreciate every thing these people do and I have a strong inkling that Saturday will have their same signature wit and flawless follow through.  Until the official debut – their spot on website will have to tide me over.  And if you’re looking for something smaller, but with equal impact, Bauble Bar’s current selection of statement necklaces are just the thing. (I’ve had my eye on this one to pair with a new black peplum top).  While we’re on the topic of statements, I’m going to need you to just trust me on this one.  There is nothing prettier this season than a shiny new pair of white pumps.  From their substantial heel to snakeskin texture these are the kind of heels that make an outfit.  And I know what you’re thinking, they’ll get dirty.  So let’s not run through the mud in them, shall we?  Wear them like one of Don Draper’s girls would, with a crisp dress and a purposeful stride.

Modern Art.

Outfit-Post-LACMA-Los-Angeles-Museum-Style

I apologize for the absence over the past couple of days – but I think everyone would agree that best friends trump blogging. Wondering where I’ve been?…

Well, all over Los Angeles really.  But on Monday I managed to get out of work early and spent the afternoon at LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art).  Along with two of my best friends (one lives here in LA, the other was visiting from New York) we’ve been lucky enough to wander among some of the most incredible art in the world together (the Louvre in Paris, the Tate Modern in London, Casa Batllo in Barcelona and – in the days when we all three lived in New York – the Met was a favorite).  Life’s problems seem smaller somehow in the shadow of a masterpiece or two.  One of my favorite things about LACMA is the great display of outdoor art.  I won’t pretend to tell you what these yellow plastic tubes signify – but they were fun to run through.  And these street lamps (which were all once used to light downtown LA over the course of the twentieth century), made for a perfect backdrop.    Outfit-Post-LACMA-Los-Angeles-Museum-StyleOutfit-Post-LACMA-Los-Angeles-Museum-Style
