NYFW DAY 1: SEVENTIES INSPIRED STYLE

The Steele Maiden: NYFW Street Style - Suede dress, Metallic Tassel Loafers and Olive Green Satchel

When it comes to New York Fashion Week (NYFW) – they say ‘go big or go home’. And while I still always want to feel like myself (especially as I’m meeting new brands/bloggers and representing my own brand), I definitely like to be bolder than the other 50 weeks of the year. For me – that means picking a few of the season’s biggest trends and really playing them up. On my first day of shows/events I went for a ‘Seventies inspired flight attendant’ vibe featuring this suede dress, structured handbag and metallic tassel loafers.

For the rest of the season, I’ll break these pieces apart for just a touch of Seventies style in my day to day looks. That means the bell-sleeved top with a denim skirt, this suede dress with a knit turtleneck underneath, these block heel loafers with boyfriend jeans, and well, this boxy moss green satchel with everythinggggg.

If you’ve been following along on Insta-Stories then you saw that when I wore this on Saturday it was a bit of a whirlwind day that involved a downtown runway show in the morning, the ShopStyle party in the afternoon and then racing out of town for my cousin’s wedding in the evening. Only to be back in the city about 15 hours later before my next round of shows and appointments on Sunday. And you know what? I loved every second of it. The quick changes, the running around, the fashion on the runways and the streets and the city’s magic energy.

There’s a strange phenomenon that occurs during NYFW in which I hear a lot of bloggers complain about being in town, the crowds, the lack of cabs, the heat, the hectic-ness of it all. And after a few seasons it’s really started to bother me. Partially because of how much I love New York, but mainly because after a lifetime of obsessing over runways and magazines, 4 years earning a degree in Fashion Design and the following 7 years cutting my teeth interning, assisting and wrangling my way up the ranks in this industry – I feel incredibly lucky to attend Fashion Week and like I’ve earned it. But am certainly not entitled to it. And I’d like to see that same mix of grit and gratitude in everyone there. In this digital age if you wanted to see what is on the runways – the internet will tell you. But if you want to see it in person (and are fortunate enough to get to be a part of it) then give in to this city that can be unforgiving but also unbelievably good. I promise, it’s a lot more fun that way.
