BUILDING A WORK WARDROBE WITH BANANA REPUBLIC

Building a work wardrobe with Banana Republic

I can’t believe that we’re already in August and at the office, our interns are saying their goodbyes for the summer. One of the things that I’ve been asked most often by interns as they prepare to graduate are how they should go about building a work wardrobe. While I’ve always worked in environments that were ‘creative casual’ – I still maKe sure to be armed with a few key pieces each season that allow me to feel pulled together and professional. And Banana Republic has long since been a trusted source for me when I’m looking to hit ‘refresh’ on my work wardrobe for a new season.

SHOP THE STORY

Since I’m never at a shortage for dresses (I favor crisp shirt dresses or chic midi lengths for the office), I find what I’m usually lacking are great separates like a basic goes with everything cardigan (I love the slim fit and hip length of this one that can tuck into a skirt or trousers) and neutral, slim fit trousers. When it gets cooler I’ll be able to layer an oxford shirt under this cardigan, then pair with tights and a skirt – or wear a chunky turtleneck with these trousers instead. Versatility is key.

As I mentioned, I’m in a less formal environment so I tend to stick to softer colors like grey, camel or navy (black innately feels more formal to me) and since I am able to mix and match them with more ‘trendy’ pieces I make sure that the key wardrobe classics are pieces that will hold up over time (fabrics like merino wool, cashmere, leather and silk crepe are all ones that really last if properly cared for). And my final bit of work wardrobe advice? A really great shoe. Sensible, quality, comfortable, sure… but also, have some fun with it. These burgundy suede pumps are going to be desk side regulars this season, I already know it.
